Shrek the Musical will close on January 3, 2010, a production spokesperson confirmed to Broadway.com. The musical, which stars Brian d’Arcy James in the title role, opened at the Broadway Theatre on December 14, 2008, and will have played 37 previews and 441 performances upon closing. A national tour of the show is set to begin at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre July13-September 5, 2010.
Shrek, the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure, is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek! as well as the DreamWorks animated film. It features book and lyrics David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Jeanine Tesori and direction by Jason Moore.
The musical currently stars James as Shrek, Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Daniel Breaker as Donkey and Robb Sapp as Pinocchio. Ben Crawford is set to take over the role of Shrek on November 10.
